Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) 2005 Report 15 August 2008
The U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has a department, the Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) that monitors hospital emergency room visits due to non-medical use of drugs or the use of illicit drugs. They estimated that the abuse of prescription drugs resulted in around 600,000 emergency room visits in 2005. The top drugs used non-medically were in the category of drugs that affect the central nervous system (CNS) - 51%, and psychoactive drugs - 46%.
